The Psychiatric Service Dog Society offers an online learning environment and support network for persons disabled by severe mental illness who wish to partner with a Psychiatric Service Dog, or whom are already partnered with such a dog. These special dogs provide each handler an efficacious and therapeutic focus that restores their ability to function on a daily basis. For some handlers, functional impairments are overcome when their Service Dog performs disability-related tasks. For others, ‘Dog Medicine’ derives from the therapeutic bond, non-verbal communications, and 24/7 togetherness they experience with their Service Dog. Regardless of the therapeutic mechanisms utilized, the end result for people with severe mental illness is restoration of function. This is what Psychiatric Service Dogs are all about.
